Hawaiian Honeymoon: Day Four

June 15, 2013

Our next excursion had us up at 2am... yuck, except at home that would have been 8am, which meant we actually got to sleep in... haha, not really. Anyway, we rode out from our resort to the Haleakala Crater (that's the bigger volcano on the island) to watch the sun come up and then bike all the way down to the shore. Mike was super excited about this, and I enjoyed it quite a bit (although he was kind of say it wasn't as exciting as he thought it was going to be). It was only in the 50s and WINDY at the top of the mountain, but it was so cool seeing the sunrise up there. I'm glad we did it. The bus ride was a little rough for me (as I discovered my pills weren't working anymore at all) but afterwards I was all right.

After it was light out, we started riding down. One of the people in our bike group was a younger kid who really slowed it down. Mike was sad but I was kind of glad we weren't going quite so fast... I'm a chicken ;) We made a few stops for photos and one for lunch. Our heads were feeling a little fuzzy from the vibrations of the wind in our helmets, and also because Mike got water in his ears from snorkeling the day before. We finally made it to the bottom, where the older of the two kids in our group took a nasty spill off a drop-off of the sidewalk. He was fine, just shaken up, poor kid, but that made the day a little more exciting I guess... anyway, it was fun.

We headed back to the resort and we kind of relaxed since it was a long day. Made a trip to Lahaina for a late lunch at Fleetwoods (cool place, lots of neat seating and such) and then we stopped at Walgreens to find another type of motion sickness relief, I got these wrist bands that I wasn't sure I thought would work. For dinner, we did go out to the west side of the island to find some food, picked a steakhouse I didn't care for (my bruschetta was yummy but too cold) but oh well. Ready for the next day's adventures.

^If you turned around toward the crater, you could barely keep your jacket on!

^Lots of people up here checking out the sunrise.

^Absolutely awesome. This doesn't do it justice.

^So cool.

^We're so high up (I think it was 11,000 ft) we are above the clouds!

^She sang the sun up.

^Right before the jackets came off.

^Somewhere near halfway down the crater. A beautiful day.

^One of our group with our leader, showing the bike poses.

^Mike is a big fan of the shaka...

^Our resort before we head out again. Sigh, no relaxing for us.

^Yay, hibiscus!
^Back in Lahaina for a bit.

^Beer and snacks at Fleetwood's.

^Colorful.
