Our journey to Hawaii, though uneventful, was not the most fun I've had in my life. I'm not a fan of flying and being on a plane for over 14 hours total (with a few uncomfortable stops) doesn't make me the happiest person around. Mike wasn't all that cheery either so as you can imagine, not much fun for us. Though we arrived in Maui at around 8pm (our time more like 2am!), it was already dark so it was an uninteresting drive to our resort at the Royal Lahaina in Ka'anapali. We went right to bed as you can imagine!
We woke up the next day without too many things in the way of plans, so we could recuperate from the travel and check out what we had around us. First of all, we took a look at the resort and our beach (on Ka'anapali Beach, one of the most beautiful in the world, I've heard) and we walked from the Royal Lahaina all the way down the beach. I'm not sure where we ended up, but at some point, I was pooped and made Mike turn back around. Then we ventured out to find some food. We ended up at a cool place called The Gazebo, which was very hidden and had a beautiful view of the Pacific. I especially liked the view, Mike really liked the food, so we were both pretty happy. We had lunch/breakfast and explored the spot a little more. Then we kept driving our little Ford north to see the sites. It was a twisty, mountainous path that we eventually decided to forgo, but it was worth looking at all the scenery.
Finally, we headed back to the resort and got ready to go to our luau. Mike wasn't sure about doing that but you pretty much have to do that when you are in Hawaii! It was a good show and pretty good food, and we chatted up our table mates for most of the night. I got my first realization how windy Maui can be... I was freezing by the time the show was over but it was enjoyable anyway. Unfortunately, my head was still on Michigan time and I was exhausted by that time, too. Day one, done!
